Healthy Restaurants: discovery app hero visual

The problem

Travellers who care about how they eat lose access to their kitchens and their usual spots the moment they leave town. Generic restaurant finders surface options sorted by reviews or distance, not by whether the menu actually matches a dietary preference.

The product had to feel trustworthy on the first screen: travellers don't have time to vet a brand-new app for an hour before deciding whether to follow its recommendation to dinner. Brand, copy and interaction had to read as "this place will feed you well" from the very first interaction.

The approach

01

Location-first flow

Onboarding asks for the one thing the product can’t function without (location) and lets everything else come later. Once a user is in, the default screen is a curated map of organic restaurants nearby, no search, no taps required.

02

Restaurant profile that earns the visit

The profile screen leads with the signals a healthy-eater actually uses, sourcing, menu transparency, reviews from people with similar preferences, instead of generic star ratings. Designed so a quick scroll is enough to commit to the visit.

03

Brand inside the product

Treated brand as part of the UX, not a wrapper. The illustrations, motion and microcopy reinforce that the app is built by people who eat the same way the user does, so trust is established before the first restaurant is even shown.

Deliverables

  • iOS UI system
  • Onboarding flow
  • Map + restaurant search
  • Restaurant profile
  • Motion + micro-interactions
  • Brand illustration

Built with Sketch and Adobe After Effects, spanning iOS and Android with the brand carried through the product itself rather than bolted on as a wrapper.

In the frames

What the gallery above actually shows, frame by frame.

  1. The app: Foodline: “eat healthy wherever you are”: a directory of organic restaurants for people who travel, on iOS and Android.
  2. The home screen greets the traveller by name and leads with places nearby as cards, photo, name, distance, before any search step.
  3. Categories by type of kitchen, so a dietary preference works as a filter rather than a scroll through everything in the city.
  4. A restaurant profile that carries what a healthy eater checks first, location, menu, opening hours, reviews, laid out so a quick scroll is enough to commit to the visit.
  5. Dark navy and electric blue throughout: the brand lives inside the product, with illustration and motion carrying the same voice as the interface.

Where this sits in our work today

Native iOS and Android product UI, planned around real behaviour rather than a feature list, is the studio’s Mobile App Design engagement today: one design system, two platforms, shared tokens holding the brand together. Location-first onboarding and a profile that earns the visit are the kind of decisions that engagement is built around.

Who an engagement like this fits

  • You need iOS and Android from one system, not two designs that drift apart after the first release.
  • Browsing and discovery are the core loop, which makes motion and transitions part of the product rather than decoration.
  • You are pre-build or mid-build and want the design to arrive as something engineering can implement directly.

If none of these describe you, say so on the free 15-minute audit and we will tell you what would fit, including when the answer is not us.

Frequently asked

Who did the work on the Healthy Restaurants app?

The CXDojo team, design led by Mariia and co-authored with Juliia Khutorna, in 2021. It is the earliest of the four cases on this site and the one that set the studio's habit of treating brand as part of the UX rather than a wrapper.

What was the brief?

An app from scratch: Foodline, for people who travel a lot and refuse to abandon how they eat on the road: enter a city, get the organic restaurants nearby, with the information a healthy eater checks first.

Why does onboarding ask for location first?

Because it is the one thing the product cannot function without. Everything else can come later; once a traveller is in, the default screen is already a curated map of places nearby, no search, no taps required.

What would a similar app cost today?

Native iOS and Android product UI sits under Mobile App Design on our pricing page: $5k-$20k. A clean MVP brief lands at the low end; a multi-tab consumer app with a custom design system at the high end.
